Frequently asked questions
When can I enrol my child?
Whilst an expression of interest may be lodged with BKCRS from birth, a registration for a kindergarten place should be lodged between 1 May and 30 June in the year prior to attendance. Please note that attendance at RCK in the 3 Year Old program does not guarantee a place at RCK in the 4 Year Old program. Enrolment applications for BKCRS member kindergartens can be lodged online (www.boroondara.vic.gov.au/residents/families-children/kindergartens).
What funding does the kindergarten receive?
Robert Cochrane Kindergarten receives funding from the Department of Education to support children to access a high-quality kindergarten program in the two years before school (3 year-old and 4 year-old). A child can only be funded for a kindergarten place at one service at any one time.
As a member of the Boroondara Kindergarten Central Registration Scheme (BKCRS), Robert Cochrane Kindergarten requires the kindergarten funding to be allocated to our service. If a child is also attending another service that offers a funded kindergarten program (e.g. long day care centre), families must advise the additional service that the funding is to be allocated to Robert Cochrane Kindergarten.
Is my child ready to start kinder?
It is advisable to consider your child’s suitability for 3 Year Old kindergarten before commencing the kindergarten year, particularly if they are young for their year (born between January and April / not yet three at the commencement of the Kindergarten year), as a repeat year of the 3 Year Old program will not be granted on the basis of a child’s age.
Is my child eligible for an additional year of kindergarten?
A repeat year of 4 Year Old kindergarten is also not guaranteed. To receive an additional year of funded kindergarten a child must exhibit delays in at least two areas of learning and development. A child considered young for their chronological age does not guarantee repeat funding.
From 2026, children who meet the eligibility requirements due to their learning or developmental needs can access an additional year of either 3 Year Old or 4 Year Old kindergarten, but not both.
If you have any queries as to your child’s suitability to start kindergarten, our teachers would be happy to discuss them with you, so please contact the Kindergarten.
